How to: Dress Down a Formal Dress Shirt

Last week I did a little “Out with the old / In with the new“. What started off as an innocent “get rid of a couple-a-things”, quickly turned into the wardrobe apocalypse of the new millennium! The final outcome was good because I ended up with some smart new threads

Being the “double cuff” kinda guy I am, it’s been a nightmare trying to find some fabric cuff links. You see, it’s not ideal when you hear the constant clanking sound of metal cuff links in the office. It’s also a complete bugger carving your name into your desk every time you move your mouse! So you need to dress them double cuffs down…

But do you think I could find said fabric cuff links anywhere? Not so fast tiger! Believe it or not, there is only one (yes, ONE) store in the entire self-proclaimed “centre of the fashion world” that is known as Sandton City where these little beauties are available:

Sigh of relief - so many wonderful colours to choose from!

Now we’re talking! From nothing to a plethora of fabric cufflinks thanks to Taggs on the upper level opposite Louis Vuitton. Hit it!

Out with the old. In with the new.

As the seasons are-a-changin, the girlfriend suggested I get stuck into my closet and get rid of all the old crap I thought was awesome once apon a time (but only ever wore once). Before I knew it there were at least 5 pairs of old Levi’s and a stack of formal shirts that were just “no good” anymore.

I looked at some of the stuff and surprisingly asked myself “who the hell would buy that?!”, then came to terms with the fact that if I’m throwing out stuff (I actually gave it to someone less fortunate for the record), I would need to replace it with some new improved items…

40 Savile Row Shirts

Fine threads from 40 Savile Row, London. Nothing wrong!

As I’m an office guy and believe that a man can never have enough quality formal shirts, it made perfect sense to me to get my new threads direct from the most famous fashion street on earth: Savile Row in London (If it was good enough for Winston Churchill, then it’s good enough for me).

Fine quality fabrics with microscopic details are excellent!

The double cuffs are awesome and the white collars are a favorite of mine, but I wish I knew where I could find myself some of those little fabric cufflinks that won’t tinker and klank on the desk while I work?

Don’t get me wrong… some cuff links are great! For example these Zippo lighters, the YSL bullets or even these Guitar Hero cuff links for guys who are really out there!

Set Your Shirt on Fire with Zippo-like Cufflinks

Can you believe that cufflinks go back to the Middle Ages where their precursor, ‘cuff strings’, adorned the wrists of fashionable gentlemen of the day. One of the earliest references to what we now recognize as cufflinks was made in the London Gazette of 1684, which referred to a pair of cuff buttons set with diamonds – styling! But can we say they same for these mini-lighter cufflinks of today??
